What Happens When You're Dehydrated

Here at Bumble, we believe the power of hydrated women will change the world. Being able to make first moves and pursue your dreams means you have to prioritize yourself, which means taking care of your body. What happens to your body and brain when you're dehydrated? Dr. Natalie Geld, a renowned neuroscientist, author, entrepreneur, and all around badass, explains below:

Maya Angelou said, “We may not control all the events that happen to us in our lives, but we can decide not to be reduced by them.” Angelou was referring to being reduced mentally and emotionally, but when we're dehydrated we get reduced physically.

Roughly 70 to 85% of your brain, blood, and muscles are made of water. Your brain uses a fifth of your overall energy, but blood is first when it comes to the water usage in your body.

When you’re dehydrated, your body pulls water from its bloodstream. Your blood then gets thicker, challenging your heart's ability to pump it through your body. This sets off a chain reaction: Your blood draws water directly from your body’s tissues, leaving you with a dry brain, mouth, and skin. Having a dry mouth means your salivary glands give up. (You can imagine what your breath smells like after that.)

Fatigue, irritability, headaches, and body aches follow this step. All of this can happen just because you didn't hydrate that day!

Our brains may get bigger as we evolve as a species, but our belief systems need a manual overhaul. It's up to hydrated women to lead that charge, whether they do it by breaking glass ceilings or SuperSwiping on Bumble. Connecting with that tall drink of water with a SuperSwipe is never thirsty.

Your mind and body are one. Top up that glass, honey!

Xo,
